HKIAC, together with the venue sponsor MHP Law Firm, brought together a group of distinguished professionals from various law firms, accounting firms, and also arbitration specialists to share their insights into the topic of damages and costs in international arbitration in HKIAC Training Workshop Shanghai Series 2018 held in MHP’s Shanghai office on September 28, 2018.
Dr. Ling Yang, HKIAC Deputy Secretary-General, attended the training workshop on behalf of HKIAC. Mr. Brian McGinley, Partner of PwC Forensic Services; Catherine Mun, Partner of Li & Partners; Kathleen Paisley, Partner of Ambos Law and Calvin Qiu, Disputes & International Arbitration team member of Berkeley Research Group’s Hong Kong’s office, joined the work shop as invited speakers.
Before the training workshop, the guests had an opportunity to take their time for an office tour. Accompanied by Martin Hu, the Managing Partner of MHP, the guests visited the multifunctional lobby, shared workspaces areas, conference rooms and recreation areas, and highly commended MHP’s unique mobile office sharing model and the vision of “Liberal, Equal, Open, and Sharing”.
At the beginning of the training workshop, Martin Hu firstly gave his warmest welcome to the delegates of HKIAC, invited speakers and all the guests in his opening remarks. He also gave the participants a brief introduction to MHP, including MHP’s innovative office sharing model and ideology of development, highlighting MHP’s continued efforts in building an arbitration team with international vision and on-the-ground understanding of Chinese markets. Dr. Ling Yang, in her welcome remarks, gave all the guests a briefing on HKIAC and the recent development of arbitration management.

During the four-hour workshop, Ms. Catherine Mun introduced principles in connection with damages in international arbitration in her presentation, while Mr. Calvin Qiu focused his speech on key principles of damages calculation; Ms. Kathleen Paisley addressed the tribunal challenges in addressing the damages and costs issues and Mr. Brian McGinley talked in his presentation about the information analysis in damages calculation. Along with the excellent speeches by invited speakers, guests shared their reviews and observations on damages and costs in international arbitration.

It is expected that MHP and HKIAC will, through and after the training workshop, continue to strengthen cooperation and exchange between each other in the area of foreign-related business and international arbitration.
